Start with the story

Read this out loud before the first clue. It turns “go find some cards” into a mission.

A Rainbow Message

Hello, Rainbow Riders!

It’s me, Stardust the Unicorn! This morning I was sliding down the rainbow when I sneezed a great big sparkly sneeze. Whoosh! All of the rainbow’s colors popped off as shiny gems and bounced away in every direction.

Now the rainbow is gray, and the whole sky looks sad. I followed the sparkles and left eight Rainbow Gem cards along the way. Each one has a rhyming riddle that tells you where to look next.

Rainbow Riders are kind, gentle, and great at taking turns. Work together, give a happy neigh every time you find a card, and follow the trail to the very end, where a magical surprise is waiting!

Your first Rainbow Gem card is attached. Giddy-up, riders!

Sparkles and neighs,
Stardust the Unicorn

5 free rhyming clues

Write each riddle on a card and hide it at the answer to the clue before it. The first clue goes in the kids’ hands after the story.

  1. Clue 1

Where do the letters and birthday cards stay?
Check out the mailbox, it’s not far away!

Answer: Mailbox. Hide it: Inside the mailbox.
  2. Clue 2

Up and down, step by step, one, two, three,
Check by the stairs, now what will you see?

Answer: Stairs. Hide it: On the bottom step.
  3. Clue 3

Tick-tock, tick-tock, what time can it be?
Check by the clock, and then you will see!

Answer: Clock. Hide it: Below a wall clock.
  4. Clue 4

It’s tall and it’s leafy with branches up high,
Check by the big tree that reaches the sky!

Answer: Big Tree. Hide it: At the base of the tree trunk.
  5. Clue 5

Where do your toys go when playtime is done?
Look in the place where you keep all the fun!

Answer: Toy Box. Hide it: On top of the toys in the toy box.

Between clues, read a unicorn rhyme to keep the story going:

Oh no, Rainbow Riders, our rainbow’s gone gray!
Find every gem and we’ll color the day!

A gem! Hear it jingle! The rainbow can glow,
Now gallop along, there are more gems to go!

One gem is left, and it’s glowing so bright,
Find it, and the rainbow will shine with delight!

Questions

What age is a unicorn scavenger hunt for?

This hunt is written for ages 3–7. Younger kids follow the picture on each card while a grown-up reads the rhyme; older kids can read the clues on their own.

How many clues should a scavenger hunt have?

Six to ten clues is the sweet spot for ages 3 to 8. It takes about 15 to 25 minutes, long enough to feel like a quest and short enough that nobody loses interest.

Can I do this hunt in a small apartment?

Yes. Pick spots in every room and zig-zag between them. The apartment trail below uses eight spots every apartment has.
