Start with the story

Read this out loud before the first clue. It turns “go find some cards” into a mission.

A Frosty Message

Greetings from the Ice Palace, Snowflake Seekers!

This is Queen Glacia, ruler of the Ice Kingdom. Every winter, my crystal snowflakes hang on the palace towers and fill the whole kingdom with snowy magic. But this morning my playful friend Pip the Snow Fox chased his tail around the towers and swished every snowflake right off with his big fluffy tail!

Now the palace has lost its sparkle. Pip feels terribly sorry, so he followed the snowflakes and left eight Snowflake cards along the way. Each one has a rhyming riddle that tells you where to look next.

Snowflake Seekers are gentle, kind and great at taking turns. Work together, give a big shiver every time you find a card, and follow the trail to the very end, where a magical winter surprise is waiting!

Your first Snowflake card is attached. Bundle up, Seekers!

With frosty hugs,
Queen Glacia of the Ice Palace

5 free rhyming clues

Write each riddle on a card and hide it at the answer to the clue before it. The first clue goes in the kids’ hands after the story.

  1. Clue 1

Back and forth, way up high in the air,
Check by the swing set, the clue’s waiting there!

Answer: Swing. Hide it: Taped under the swing seat.
  2. Clue 2

Where do you splash with your bubbles and boats?
Look in the place where your rubber duck floats!

Answer: Bathtub. Hide it: Inside the (dry!) bathtub.
  3. Clue 3

Where do the letters and birthday cards stay?
Check out the mailbox, it’s not far away!

Answer: Mailbox. Hide it: Inside the mailbox.
  4. Clue 4

Up and down, step by step, one, two, three,
Check by the stairs, now what will you see?

Answer: Stairs. Hide it: On the bottom step.
  5. Clue 5

Tick-tock, tick-tock, what time can it be?
Check by the clock, and then you will see!

Answer: Clock. Hide it: Below a wall clock.

Between clues, read a ice kingdom rhyme to keep the story going:

Bundle up, Seekers, and come out to play!
Pip the Snow Fox swished the snowflakes away!

A snowflake! It sparkles and twinkles so bright,
Now tiptoe along to the next one in sight!

The very last snowflake shines brightest by far,
Find it and bring back the Queen’s Winter Star!

Six to ten clues is the sweet spot for ages 3 to 8. It takes about 15 to 25 minutes, long enough to feel like a quest and short enough that nobody loses interest.

Can I do this hunt in a small apartment?

Yes. Pick spots in every room and zig-zag between them. The apartment trail below uses eight spots every apartment has.
