Start with the story

Read this out loud before the first clue. It turns “go find some cards” into a mission.

Urgent Field Report

Attention, Junior Rangers!

This is your Head Paleontologist reporting from base camp. We have an emergency! The old volcano has started to rumble, and the dinosaur eggs from our dig site have been scattered all over this territory.

We need brave, sharp-eyed rangers to track them down before the volcano erupts. I have hidden eight secret Field Notes along the trail. Each one has a rhyming riddle that tells you where to search next.

Work together, listen carefully, and stomp like a dinosaur when you find each clue. If you follow the trail all the way to the end, you’ll discover Mama Dino’s greatest treasure!

Your first Field Note is attached. Good luck, rangers!

Roaring regards,
The Head Paleontologist

5 free rhyming clues

Write each riddle on a card and hide it at the answer to the clue before it. The first clue goes in the kids’ hands after the story.

  1. Clue 1

Where do we snuggle for movies and naps?
Check under the cushions, it’s there, perhaps!

Answer: Couch. Hide it: Under a couch cushion.
  2. Clue 2

Where do we gather for breakfast and treats?
Look by the table with all of the seats!

Answer: Kitchen Table. Hide it: On (or under) the kitchen table.
  3. Clue 3

Where do the socks go when they’re dirty and worn?
Dig through the laundry, from evening to morn!

Answer: Laundry Basket. Hide it: On top of the laundry basket.
  4. Clue 4

Black keys and white keys that plink and that plonk,
Check by the piano and play a quick song!

Answer: Piano. Hide it: On the piano keys (lid open).
  5. Clue 5

Back and forth, way up high in the air,
Check by the swing set, the clue’s waiting there!

Answer: Swing. Hide it: Taped under the swing seat.

Between clues, read a dinosaur rhyme to keep the story going:

The volcano is rumbling, there’s no time to wait,
Grab your field hats, rangers, let’s not be late!

You found an egg, ranger! You’re doing just great,
But more eggs are hiding, so don’t hesitate!

One egg is still missing, the biggest of all,
Mama Dino’s treasure! So answer the call!

Make it right for their age

Questions

What age is a dinosaur scavenger hunt for?

This hunt is written for ages 3–6. Younger kids follow the picture on each card while a grown-up reads the rhyme; older kids can read the clues on their own.

How many clues should a scavenger hunt have?

Six to ten clues is the sweet spot for ages 3 to 8. It takes about 15 to 25 minutes, long enough to feel like a quest and short enough that nobody loses interest.

Can I do this hunt in a small apartment?

Yes. Pick spots in every room and zig-zag between them. The apartment trail below uses eight spots every apartment has.
