Start with the story

Read this out loud before the first clue. It turns “go find some cards” into a mission.

A Letter from the Captain

Ahoy, Pirate Crew!

Captain Barnaby here, the most famous pirate on the seven seas. I buried my treasure chest somewhere close by, but that silly parrot of mine got into my ledger and scrambled the map into rhymes!

Now there are eight pieces of the map hidden around this ship. Each piece has a riddle that points to where the next one is hiding.

A good pirate crew sticks together, so take turns, share the clues, and give a big “ARRR!” every time you find one. Follow the map to the very end and the treasure is yours to keep!

Here be the first piece of the map. Fair winds, mateys!

Yer Captain,
Captain Barnaby

5 free rhyming clues

Write each riddle on a card and hide it at the answer to the clue before it. The first clue goes in the kids’ hands after the story.

  5. Clue 5

Where do we snuggle for movies and naps?
Check under the cushions, it’s there, perhaps!

Answer: Couch. Hide it: Under a couch cushion.

Between clues, read a pirate rhyme to keep the story going:

Ahoy, little mateys! Now gather around,
Captain Barnaby’s treasure is waiting to be found!

Yo ho ho, matey, you’re sharp as a hook!
The parrot squawks, “Here’s the next place to look!”

Batten the hatches, the end is in sight,
Captain Barnaby’s treasure is hidden just right!

Six to ten clues is the sweet spot for ages 3 to 8. It takes about 15 to 25 minutes, long enough to feel like a quest and short enough that nobody loses interest.

Can I do this hunt in a small apartment?

Yes. Pick spots in every room and zig-zag between them. The apartment trail below uses eight spots every apartment has.
