Start with the story

Read this out loud before the first clue. It turns “go find some cards” into a mission.

Work Order from the Boss

Listen up, Construction Crew!

This is Foreman Fran, boss of the building site. Today is the day of the Big Build! But this morning a gust of wind whooshed through the site, and our blueprint blew into pieces. Without it, the diggers don’t know where to dig and the cranes don’t know what to lift!

My crew tracked down eight blueprint pieces and marked each one with a rhyming riddle. Every riddle tells you where the next piece is hiding.

Good builders follow the safety rules: walk, don’t run, work as a team, and shout “Beep beep!” every time you find a piece. Put the whole blueprint back together and the Big Build can begin!

Your first blueprint piece is attached. Hard hats on, crew!

Build it strong,
Foreman Fran

5 free rhyming clues

Write each riddle on a card and hide it at the answer to the clue before it. The first clue goes in the kids’ hands after the story.

  1. Clue 1

Where do the socks go when they’re dirty and worn?
Dig through the laundry, from evening to morn!

Answer: Laundry Basket. Hide it: On top of the laundry basket.
  2. Clue 2

Black keys and white keys that plink and that plonk,
Check by the piano and play a quick song!

Answer: Piano. Hide it: On the piano keys (lid open).
  3. Clue 3

Back and forth, way up high in the air,
Check by the swing set, the clue’s waiting there!

Answer: Swing. Hide it: Taped under the swing seat.
  4. Clue 4

Where do you splash with your bubbles and boats?
Look in the place where your rubber duck floats!

Answer: Bathtub. Hide it: Inside the (dry!) bathtub.
  5. Clue 5

Where do the letters and birthday cards stay?
Check out the mailbox, it’s not far away!

Answer: Mailbox. Hide it: Inside the mailbox.

Between clues, read a construction rhyme to keep the story going:

Hard hats on, crew! The Big Build starts today,
But the blueprint is missing, it blew right away!

Beep, beep, beep! The truck backs up slow,
You found a piece, crew! Now off we go!

One piece is left, then the plan is complete,
Find the Big Build site for a well-earned treat!

Questions

What age is a construction scavenger hunt for?

This hunt is written for ages 3–7. Younger kids follow the picture on each card while a grown-up reads the rhyme; older kids can read the clues on their own.

How many clues should a scavenger hunt have?

Six to ten clues is the sweet spot for ages 3 to 8. It takes about 15 to 25 minutes, long enough to feel like a quest and short enough that nobody loses interest.

Can I do this hunt in a small apartment?

Yes. Pick spots in every room and zig-zag between them. The apartment trail below uses eight spots every apartment has.
