Start with the story

Read this out loud before the first clue. It turns “go find some cards” into a mission.

Halloween Treat Alert

Boo! Hello, Pumpkin Patrol!

It’s me, Wispy, the littlest ghost on Pumpkin Lane. I was practicing my very first “BOO!”, but it came out as a giant “ACHOO!” instead. My sneeze blew the Halloween treats right out of the big pumpkin bucket, and now they’re hiding all over!

The costume parade starts soon, and nobody can march without treats. I floated around and tucked eight Boo Notes along the way. Each one has a rhyming riddle that tells you where to look next.

Work together, peek in every corner, and give a friendly “Boo!” each time you find a note. Follow the trail all the way to the end, where the biggest treat of all is waiting!

Your first Boo Note is attached. Grab your treat bags, Pumpkin Patrol!

Giggles and boos,
Wispy the Little Ghost

5 free rhyming clues

Write each riddle on a card and hide it at the answer to the clue before it. The first clue goes in the kids’ hands after the story.

  1. Clue 1

Where are the pencils, the paper, and pens?
Check by the desk, and then count to ten!

Answer: Desk. Hide it: Under the keyboard or a notebook.
  2. Clue 2

Where does the car sleep when it’s done for the day?
Check in the garage, but don’t drive away!

Answer: Garage. Hide it: Just inside the garage door.
  3. Clue 3

Where do you sleep when the moon’s shining bright?
Look under the pillow where you snuggle at night!

Answer: Bed. Hide it: Under the pillow.
  4. Clue 4

Sneakers and boots standing all in a row,
Check where the shoes rest when they’re done on the go!

Answer: Shoe Rack. Hide it: Inside a shoe on the shoe rack.
  5. Clue 5

Where do the cartoons and movies all play?
Check by the TV, but don’t watch today!

Answer: TV. Hide it: Under the TV remote.

Between clues, read a halloween rhyme to keep the story going:

Oh no, Pumpkin Patrol, the treats blew away!
Let’s find every one for the big parade day!

A treat! You found it! Hip, hip, hooray!
The rest of the candy is not far away!

One treat is still missing, the sweetest by far,
Find it and you’ll be the Halloween star!

Make it right for their age

Questions

What age is a halloween scavenger hunt for?

This hunt is written for ages 3–7. Younger kids follow the picture on each card while a grown-up reads the rhyme; older kids can read the clues on their own.

How many clues should a scavenger hunt have?

Six to ten clues is the sweet spot for ages 3 to 8. It takes about 15 to 25 minutes, long enough to feel like a quest and short enough that nobody loses interest.

Can I do this hunt in a small apartment?

Yes. Pick spots in every room and zig-zag between them. The apartment trail below uses eight spots every apartment has.
